About
Pemberton Bag Company
Handcrafted oilskin bags, thoughtfully made in the small mountain town of Pemberton, British Columbia, on the unceded territory of the Líl̓wat First Nation.
Founded and handcrafted by Nina Babiuk, a zoologist turned bag maker, Pemberton Bag Company is built on a simple belief: buy less, choose well, and make it last.
My years studying the natural world taught me to appreciate thoughtful design, resilience, and the value of things that endure. Those same principles now guide every bag I make.
Growing up in Northern Australia and now calling the mountains of Pemberton home, the outdoors has always been at the heart of my life. From camping and fishing to boating and everyday adventures, I wanted a bag that could do it all—one that was as beautiful as it was practical. When I couldn't find one that reflected my values, I decided to make it.
That simple idea became Pemberton Bag Company: a slow fashion brand inspired by traditional craftsmanship and built around timeless materials. Every bag is made one at a time, honouring the heritage of oilskin—one of the world's original waterproof fabrics—and the belief that well-made goods should last for years, not seasons.
Oilskin
Before modern synthetic fabrics, there was oilskin.
For generations, Scottish fishermen relied on this remarkable cloth to keep them dry in the harshest conditions. Today, I source my oilskin from Merchant & Mills, an ethical fabric and notions company. The fabric is produced in one of Scotland's oldest mills using traditional methods that have been refined over more than a century.
Unlike heavier waxed canvas, oilskin is woven from tightly constructed cloth, making it lighter while remaining exceptionally durable. It softens with use and develops a rich patina over time, telling the story of every journey and adventure.
Slow Fashion
Every bag begins with a single piece of cloth and is handcrafted from the first cut to the final stitch.
There is no mass production, no rushing the process, and no shortcuts—just thoughtful craftsmanship and careful attention to detail. Designed to age beautifully, be repaired when needed, and accompany you for years to come, each bag is made to become part of your story.
Inspired by where I live. Built for everyday adventures. Made to last a lifetime.
